JEA specialist wins inaugural statewide public-power award for tree work

A JEA employee whose work keeps trees from knocking out power lines across Northeast Florida has received the first-ever Professional Excellence Award from the Florida Municipal Electric Association, marking statewide recognition for a behind-the-scenes role critical to grid reliability.

Joe Anderson, a Vegetative Management Specialist Senior at JEA, was presented the inaugural award during a JEA Board of Directors meeting on August 26. The Florida Municipal Electric Association established the award to recognize an individual who has consistently demonstrated commitment to their utility, public power, and the improvement of services and reliability.

What the award recognizes

Anderson oversees JEA's Vegetative Management team, which runs a 2. 5-year proactive routine cycle trimming schedule across the utility's 900-square-mile service territory. The program maps real-time vegetation growth against circuit outage data—tracking which trees and branches are most likely to cause power failures and prioritizing them for trimming.

The work directly affects the frequency and duration of outages experienced by JEA's more than one million customers across four Northeast Florida counties. Trees and branches contacting overhead power lines are a leading cause of outages, particularly during storms and high winds. By trimming on a planned cycle rather than reacting to failures, the utility aims to prevent interruptions before they happen.

Under Anderson's guidance, JEA has achieved its 15th consecutive year as a national Tree Line USA Utility by the Arbor Day Foundation, a designation awarded to utilities that meet national standards for public education, worker safety, and quality tree care. Anderson has also served as a liaison and active partner to Greenscape of Jacksonville for more than a decade.

"Throughout his career at JEA, Joe's work has reflected the best of public power: commitment, service and a focus on doing the right thing for our customers and community," JEA Interim Managing Director and CEO Jody Brooks said. "His work shows how grid safety and reliability can be balanced with protecting and preserving our natural environment. "

Amy Zubaly, executive director of the Florida Municipal Electric Association, said the new award gives Florida's public power utilities an opportunity to recognize exceptional service.
