St. Johns County government offices, libraries, and constitutional offices will be closed Wednesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day, the county announced November 4. All county services will resume regular business hours Thursday, November 12.

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection schedules will remain unchanged during the holiday, and the county's two waste transfer stations will remain open during regular business hours on November 11.

What's happening

All departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, administrative offices, libraries and bookmobiles, the Supervisor of Elections Office, the Property Appraiser's Office, the Tax Collector's Office, and the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller's Office will be closed Wednesday, November 11.

All offices will resume standard business hours on Thursday, November 12.

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection schedules will not be delayed. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road transfer stations will remain open during standard business hours on November 11.

Residents can download the Recycle Coach app or visit www. recyclestjohns. com to view curbside collection schedules, sign up for alerts, and learn how to properly dispose of different household waste materials.

What services are affected

The closure affects all county administrative functions that residents might need for permitting, land-use inquiries, code enforcement questions, or general county business. Residents planning to visit county offices for building permits, development applications, or zoning questions should plan accordingly and visit Thursday or later.

Library patrons will not be able to check out books, use computers, or access other library services on November 11. The closure includes all St. Johns County library branches as well as the bookmobiles that serve rural areas of the county. Books can still be returned at outdoor drop boxes where available, and digital library services remain accessible online.

Constitutional offices handle many services residents need for legal, property, and election matters. The Supervisor of Elections Office manages voter registration and election records. The Property Appraiser's Office handles property valuations and homestead exemption applications. The Tax Collector's Office processes vehicle registrations, driver license services, and property tax payments. The Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller's Office maintains court records and handles marriage licenses, official records, and county finances. All of these services will be unavailable Wednesday.

Waste collection continues

St. Johns County has opted to keep solid-waste services running on the holiday, a decision that benefits residents by avoiding the cascading delays that occur when a collection day is skipped. When waste collection is delayed by a holiday, every subsequent day of the week shifts back by one day, often creating confusion and missed pickups.

By maintaining the regular schedule, residents can set out garbage, recycling, and yard waste on their usual collection day without needing to track an altered calendar. This approach is common for municipal and county waste services during federal holidays that fall midweek, as it keeps crews on a consistent route schedule and prevents overflow at the curb.

The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road transfer stations will remain open during standard business hours on November 11. These facilities allow residents to drop off household waste, bulk items, yard debris, and recyclables that don't fit into curbside collection. Keeping the transfer stations open during the holiday gives residents an option for disposal needs over the long weekend, particularly for households tackling fall yard work or home projects.

The county promotes the Recycle Coach app and the www. recyclestjohns. com website as tools for residents to confirm their collection day, set up reminders, and look up disposal guidelines for items such as electronics, hazardous materials, and oversized debris. Residents unsure of their schedule due to the holiday can check either resource to confirm pickup days.

Planning around the closure

Residents who need to conduct county business should plan to visit offices Thursday, November 12, or handle matters online if available. Many county services, including building-permit applications, code-enforcement reports, and property records searches, can be initiated or checked online through the county's website, reducing the need for in-person visits.

For property-tax payments, vehicle-registration renewals, and other Tax Collector services, the county's online portal allows many transactions to be completed remotely. Property records, marriage licenses, and court filings through the Clerk's office also have online access for viewing and, in some cases, submission.

Library patrons can access the county's digital catalog, e-books, audiobooks, and research databases through the library website even while physical branches are closed. Holds and requests placed online will be ready for pickup once branches reopen Thursday.

Residents with urgent solid-waste needs on November 11 can take advantage of the open transfer stations rather than waiting for curbside pickup. The transfer-station option is particularly useful for large or irregular items that require special disposal, such as furniture, appliances, construction debris, or significant volumes of yard waste following a storm or major landscaping project.

Veterans Day observance in a growing county

The Veterans Day closure comes as St. Johns County continues to be among Florida's fastest-growing counties, with new residents and expanded services increasing demand for county offices year-round. The county's administrative and constitutional offices handle a rising volume of permitting, property transactions, voter registrations, and public inquiries driven by residential growth along the CR 210 corridor, Nocatee, SilverLeaf, and the SR 16 and World Golf Village areas.

Even during holiday closures, the county's emphasis on maintaining waste collection and transfer-station access reflects the operational challenges of serving a growing population. Consistency in service schedules helps prevent backlogs and keeps infrastructure functioning smoothly, particularly in fast-developing areas where new subdivisions and construction generate higher volumes of waste and require predictable collection.

For residents planning ahead, county offices will be closed for just the single day and will return to full operations the following morning, minimizing disruption to ongoing permitting, property, and administrative processes that underpin the region's continued development.
